Winkin’ and Blinkin’ and Nod: Day 66 – 200 to go

Last night I searched online for the words and chords to a lull-a-bye that my father used to sing to my siblings and I when we were young. It is Winkin’ and Blinkin’ and Nod:

Winkin’ , Blinkin, and Nod, one night sailed off in a wooden shoe;
Sailed of on a river of crystal light into a sea of dew
“where are you going and what do you wish?” the old moon asked the three.
“we’ve come to fish for the herring fish that live in this beautiful sea.
nets of silver and gold have we,” said Winkin, Blinkin, and Nod.

The old moon laughed and sang a song as they rocked in the wooden shoe.
And the wind that sped them all night long ruffled the waves of dew.
now the little stars are the herring fish that live in that beautiful sea;
“Cast your nets wherever you wish never afraid are we!”
So cried the stars to the fishermen three – Winkin’, and Blinkin’, and Nod.

So all night long their nets they threw to the stars in the twinkling foam.
‘Til down from the skies came the wooden shoe bringing the fisherman home.
’twas all so pretty a sail it seemed as if it could not be.
Some folks say ’twas a dream they dreamed of sailing that misty sea.
But I shall name you the fisherman three – Winkin’, Blinkin’, and Nod.

Now Winkin’ and Blinkin’ are two little eyes and Nod is a little head.
And the wooden shoe that sailed the skies is a wee ones trundle bed.
So close your eyes while mother sings of the wonderful sights that be.
And you shall see those beautiful things as you sail on the misty sea.
where the old shoe rocked the fishermen three – Winkin’, Blinkin’, and Nod.

Lull-a-byes are great. I want to be able to sing some good lull-a-byes to my kids… and with #1 on the way I guess it is time to start learning. I want to play them all on Guitar. I learned a really soft song for my wife that kinda got me on this kick. It was Hallelujah – by Rufus Wainright, it was in Shrek. I want to learn Lullabye by Billy Joel, Return to Pooh Corner by Kenny Loggins, along with this Winkin and Blinkin and Nod Lull-a-bye.

The Word from the Womb:
The baby’s brain now has the same structure it is going to have when it is born…but not the same size… the thyroid, pancreas and gall bladder are going to be formed over the next three days.

  1. Winkin’ Blinkin’ & Nod
    I had only heard this sung by the Simon sisters. I was singing what words I could make out to my three, triplets, who I often refer to as Winkin’ Blinkin’ & Nod. I finally went online to find the words and came across your page. I heartily agree with your sentiment. My three love nothing better than to be read to or sung to. Thanks.

  2. love that poem
    i love that poem too, but i didn’t know it had a tune! any ideas where i could find the music? best wishes with your baby, we’ve got 4 kids and what an adventure it is!! we wouldn’t trade it for the world though!
